Fencai is an over-glaze enamel technique that dates back to the 18th century used to decorate with colour and pattern, porcelain pots made at the Imperial Kilns of Jingdezhen but painted at the Palace workshops in Beijing .
I have spent a long time investigating historic Chinese cobalt underglaze painting, made famous in blue and white export porcelain. Through abstract brush strokes and expressive mark-making, I have reinterpreted this vivid blue to cultivate my ‘New Ming.’
